No Excuse Prehab
While No Excuse Rehab is about recovery from a current injury No Excuse Prehab takes this further and is about the reducing the risk of future injury or decline. Our goal here is about maintaining current health, preventing future injuries, protecting against future decline and increasing current functional performance.
The key here follows the same psychological tricks we use in No Excuse Rehab with longer term goals. It’s important to understand what your objectives might be and creating a program that you can follow that progresses you at the speed that’s appropriate for you.
By way of example, these are some of my own goals:
- I would like to run the London marathon.
- I would like to learn to jump a horse.
- I would like to be able to pick up 2 25kg containers easily and walk with them.
- I would like to be able to do a pistol squat by the time I’m 51.
When I’m 65 my goals are:
- I would like to be able to run for a bus without a struggle.
- I would like to be able to pick up a heavy object and put it overhead.
- I would like to still be able to ride horses and jump them.
When I am 80 my goals are:
- To be able to get off of the floor without assistance.
- To get off a chair without using my arms.
- To be able to open a bottle of wine without using gadgets.
- To be able to walk a dog off track for an hour.
- To still be able to dance with my wife.
What would your goals be? Mine are absolutely achievable but we all need to start working on them now because the pesky aging process will otherwise kick in.
